The Brother DS-740D duplex mobile scanner allows users to scan documents at home, in the office or on the go. It features single-page feed and can scan both mono and duplex documents in black and white and color at speeds up to 16 ppm. Users simply plug the USB cable into their computer or laptop. The fast, accurate Brother DS-740D portable document scanner is perfect for scanning directly to your laptop via USB, but it's overshadowed by its slightly more expensive sibling, with more features and versatility.
Space-saving design, ability to scan to the cloud, powerful image enhancement
The Brother DSmobile DS-740D measures 1.8 x 11.9 x 2.5 inches and weighs 1.4 pounds, although the DS-940DW has an onboard battery, Wi-Fi radio, and microSD slot, it is only slightly smaller than the DS-940DW. Epson's DS-80W is still smaller and lighter, and it's another Editor's Choice model with a battery and Wi-Fi. Epson's DS-70 portable document scanner is configured closer to the DS-740D and is even smaller, weighing just 0.59 pounds.
Another notable difference in the Brother scanners is that the DS-940DW comes with a convenient control panel for selecting various scanning and connectivity options, while the DS-740D has only a start/stop button for starting and canceling scanning.
Brother rated the DS-740D at 16ppm for both single-sided (one-sided) and duplex (two-sided) scanning, but since it scans both sides of a duplex page, the more accurate duplex rating is 32ipm. I found that these numbers are almost correct if I always master the process. (I ran my tests through a USB connection on a standard Intel Core i5 test platform running Windows 10 Pro.) When scanning and saving our two 25 page text documents (one containing a 25 page single sided document and one containing a 50 page double sided sample) the image PDF.
Because the DS-740D (and other single-page portables) are designed to scan short documents, they scored above average. In comparison, Epson's DS-70 scored 8.2 ppm and 18.7 ipm for scanning and processing the same pages of text.
The DS-740D's performance in scanning these same documents into a more general searchable PDF format was approximately the same as that of image PDFs.
In addition to the standard TWAIN and WIA scanner drivers for connecting to applications that support direct scanning, this package includes the latest ICA drivers for Windows and SANE drivers for Mac. Also included are Nuance PaperPort SE with OCR, Power PDF, Brother's iPrint&Scan for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, and Presto PageManager with OCR for Mac. supported cloud sites include Google Drive, Dropbox, Evernote, and OneDrive.
PaperPort SE is a combination scanner interface and basic document management system, and Power PDF helps you create and edit PDFs. iPrint&Scan is Brother's cross-platform driver, and Presto PageManager sounds like a scanner interface and basic document management system for macOS.
The DS-740D has many advanced features for image and text optimization, such as automatic color detection, image rotation, blank page detection, automatic cropping, automatic deskew, background removal, bleed detection, hole punch removal, text enhancement, and color dropout. It also includes TWAIN and WIA drivers for PC and ICA, and SANE drivers for Mac. Bundled software includes OCR, BR-Receipts, Brother iPrint and Scan, Kofax Power PDF Standard, Presto!BizCard and Kofax PaperPort. users are able to convert scanned documents into editable Microsoft Word files.
